When I think of the tropics I think of bright colors, impossible heat, and sugarcane reaching to the sky. How much more exotic would the Caribbean have seemed to Europeans invading the islands? Or Africans brought over and enslaved to grow sugar cane? Beautiful and terrible all at once.
